6 Popular Memes That Parents Must Know
Learning popular memes will help you bridge the communication gap with young people
Yesterday, the mom of my 7-year-old godson got a call from the school principal saying that he’s been calling his schoolmates “gay” on the school bus.
This “serious” matter intrigued my family so much that my elder daughter decided to conduct a little investigation this morning. She asked some of his schoolmates and other kids who take the same ferry to school to understand my godson’s behavior. (Background info: he’s not a popular kid due to his irritable and uncontrollable temper, but he’s a very clever and endearing boy.)
It turns out that he’s been called “gay” whenever he moves after being asked, “English or Spanish?” — Which is a popular meme.
The following line of this meme is: Whoever moves first is gay. Here’s an online explanation of this meme. The original meme was “Do you speak English or Spanish?” but now it is just “English or Spanish?”
This meme has gone viral all over the world, and kids use it a lot, leaving some adults clueless about what’s happening or what the kids are saying. In case you don’t know, it is used to tell someone to freeze.
My godson’s mom responded very matter-of-factly that she didn’t speak Spanish when her son asked her the question. She thought her son had blurted out some senseless things again.
Therefore, it seems that it isn’t entirely my godson’s fault for calling other kids “gay” because he’s been called that, and he just thought “gay” means stupid.
After this report, my lovely daughter gave us, she shared five more popular memes that she thinks we should know.
Ohio. It means weird in a bad way. When my godson said it to his mom the other day, she thought he wanted to know about the state of Ohio. She took out an atlas and explained that it’s a state in the US. There was an obvious misunderstanding that we would say in Chinese, a chicken talking to a duck.
Cap. It means to lie or fake as an adjective and a verb. For example, “what he says is cap” means what he says is not true. They are capping = they are lying. And no cap means it’s the truth.
It’s giving. This one has multiple meanings, most commonly used as “it looks like” or having the vibe of something. For example, it’s giving cool means it’s extremely cool.
Rizz. It means flirt as a verb and a noun.
Skibidi. According to wikiHow, “Skibidi” is a humorous nonsense word with no real meaning. It is a wacky word that references or makes fun of the absurdity of slang. Depending on the context, it can mean “cool,” “dumb,” or “bad,” or just be used as a filler word. ”
